Support and mentoring for children of all ages
Supporting children by first focusing on their interests deepens learning, fosters motivation, and builds confidence, making the whole experience more meaningful and engaging. With this in mind, I have designed and developed a support and mentoring programme called Make Time. This has clearly defined aims and an overarching structure based on tried and tested methods, but most importantly, it is centred around the interests of the individuals being supported.
The programme will always work better if the individuals involved have a high degree of choice but activities could include things like arts and crafts, woodwork, gardening, playing games, painting, baking, construction, sand play, den building, reading, walking, animal care, visiting places of interest and charity work.
Many children will benefit considerably from working with someone who is not already known to them - someone with the necessary qualifications, experience and time to support them appropriately and safely. Children who are struggling socially or academically for whatever reason are particularly likely to benefit from this approach, but the flexibility of the programme means that it could have considerable benefits for all children regardless of their current situation.
Blocks of sessions can be designed for individuals or small groups. The type and number of support sessions can vary greatly and there does not need to be any long-term commitment unless this is desired.
